More Experiencer Patterns: Need, Pain & Knowledge (mujhe chahiye, dard hona)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Hindi, you don't 'have' a need; the need 'happens' to you. Use the dative case (ko) for the person experiencing.
- Use 'ko' after the person: 'Mujhe' (Mujh + ko) means 'to me'.
- The verb agrees with the object, not the person: 'Mujhe kitāb chahiye' (I need the book).
- For pain/feelings, use 'hona' (to be/happen): 'Mujhe dard ho raha hai' (I am in pain).
Overview
mujhe paani chahiye (I need water), mujhe sir mein dard hai(I have a headache, lit: to-me head-in pain is). Also for ability:
mujhse yeh nahi hota(I can't do this, lit: from-me this doesn't happen).
