چگونه از Much و Many استفاده کنیم (قوانین اساسی اسم)

دو تا ابزار جادویی داری: many برای چیزایی که میتونی بشمری و much برای چیزایی که فقط میتونی اندازه‌ بگیری.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'Many' for things you can count (apples) and 'Much' for things you can't (water).

  • Use 'Many' with plural countable nouns like 'books' or 'people'.
  • Use 'Much' with singular uncountable nouns like 'time' or 'sugar'.
  • Prefer 'A lot of' in positive sentences; keep 'Much/Many' for questions and negatives.
Many + 🍎🍎🍎 | Much + 💧

How many stages are there?
(چند تا استیج اونجا هست؟) اما ممکنه غر بزنی که:
There isn’t much space to dance.

Form | Example | Translation
--- | --- | ---
Many + Plural Noun | many followers | فالوورهای زیاد
Much + Uncountable Noun | much data |
not much
(زیاد نه)، حتی اگه چهار تا مقاله برای نوشتن داشته باشی؛ چون homework در انگلیسی یه مفهوم غیرقابل‌شمارشه.
(نکته حرفه‌ای: معلم‌ها از این یه ترفند متنفرن!). ما همچنین از اونا برای ساختن سوالات «How... ?» استفاده می‌کنیم که بخش بزرگی از زندگی‌مون رو پر کردن.
How many likes did my post get?
(پستم چند تا لایک گرفت؟) در مقابل
How much time did I waste scrolling today?

5
اگه اسم جمعه (مثل apps ، cars ، people)، از many استفاده کن.
6
اگه اسم مفرده/غیرقابل‌شمارشه (مثل luggage ، money ، water)، از much استفاده کن.

کی استفاده کنیم

با اینکه از نظر فنی می‌تونی از much و many در جملات مثبت هم استفاده کنی، اونا در واقع پاتوق‌های خاص خودشون رو دارن که بیشتر اونجاها دیده می‌شن:
  • جملات منفی: این محیط طبیعی اونهاست. "I don't have many friends on LinkedIn« یا »There isn't much milk in the fridge." استفاده از اونا اینجا کاملاً طبیعی و مدرن به نظر می‌رسه.
  • سوالات: اینجا جاییه که می‌درخشن. ما از اونا همراه با how برای پرسیدن مقدار استفاده می‌کنیم.
How many slices of pizza do you want?
(من پیشنهاد می‌کنم همه‌شون رو برداری!).
How much does this Uber cost?
    (هزینه این اسنپ/اوبر چقدر می‌شه؟)
  • جملات مثبت رسمی: توی نوشته‌های خیلی رسمی (مثل مقالات دانشگاهی)، ممکنه many رو توی یه جمله مثبت ببینی:
    Many scholars believe...
(بسیاری از محققان معتقدند...). اما توی حرف زدن معمولی، معمولاً جاشون رو با a lot of عوض می‌کنیم. اگه بگی
    I have much money
، شبیه ویلن‌های فیلم‌ها به نظر می‌رسی. به جاش بگو
I have a lot of money
(و بعدش لطفاً من رو یه قهوه مهمون کن).
  • همراه با 'Too'، 'So' یا 'As': این کلمه‌ها باعث می‌شن استفاده از much و many توی جملات مثبت کاملاً اوکی باشه.
There is too much noise in this cafe!
(توی این کافه خیلی زیاد سروصدا هست!) یا
I have so many things to do!
(این‌قدر کارهای زیادی برای انجام دادن دارم!).

اشتباهات رایج

حتی زبان‌آموزهای پیشرفته هم گاهی توی این‌ها سوتی می‌دن، معمولاً چون توی زبان مادریشون با این قضیه متفاوت برخورد می‌شه.
  • تله‌ی Much جمع: گفتن much people یا much books.
    How much money؟
    اما
    How many dollars؟
    .
  • سه‌گانه‌ی Advice/Information/News: توی خیلی از زبان‌ها، این‌ها قابل‌شمارش هستن. در انگلیسی، این‌ها شدیداً غیرقابل‌شمارشن. "I don't have much news« درسته. »I don't have many news" غلطه ✗.
  • استفاده بیش از حد در جملات مثبت: استفاده از much در یک جمله مثبت ساده مثل
    I have much time
. از نظر گرامری «غلط» نیست، اما از نظر اجتماعی عجیبه. برای کپشن‌های روزمره اینستاگرامت از a lot of استفاده کن.

مقایسه با الگوهای مشابه

گاهی اوقات much و many یه کم زیادی جدی و شدید به نظر می‌رسن. اینجاست که پسرعموهاشون وارد بازی می‌شن:
  • A lot of / Lots of: این‌ها گزینه‌های آدم‌های «تنبل» هستن! چون هم برای اسامی قابل‌شمارش کار می‌کنن و هم غیرقابل‌شمارش.
I have a lot of friends
    و
I have a lot of time
. هر وقت توی یه جمله مثبت شک داشتی، از این‌ها استفاده کن. اونا مثل شلوار گرمکن یا راحتیِ گرامر زبان انگلیسی هستن؛ راحتن و تقریباً برای هر موقعیتی مناسبن.
  • Few در مقابل Little: این‌ها متضاد هستن. Few برای اسامی قابل‌شمارشه (
    I have few followers
    - فالوورهای کمی دارم)، و little برای اسامی غیرقابل‌شمارشه (
I have little patience for slow Wi-Fi
    - صبر کمی برای وای‌فای کند دارم).
  • Many در مقابل A few: کلمه many به تعداد زیاد اشاره داره، در حالی که a few به تعداد کم اشاره می‌کنه.
    I have many emails
    (کمک!) در مقابل
    I have a few emails
    (از پسش برمیام).

سؤالات رایج

Q

آیا می‌تونم از much در یک جمله مثبت استفاده کنم؟

بله، اما فقط با کلماتی مثل too ، so یا as. گفتن

I have much work
طوریه که انگار داری توی یکی از رمان‌های چارلز دیکنز زندگی می‌کنی. به جاش از
I have a lot of work
استفاده کن.

Q

کلمه people با much میاد یا many؟

با many میاد. با اینکه آخرش -s نداره، اما people جمعِ کلمه person هست. تو می‌تونی اونا رو بشماری!

How many people are in the Zoom meeting?

Q

در مورد coffee چطور؟ شنیدم مردم می‌گن two coffees.

نکته خوبی بود! توی کافه، a coffee در واقع مخفف

a cup of coffee
(یک فنجان قهوه) هست. پس اگه منظورت فنجان باشه، می‌تونی بگی
How many coffees?
. اما اگه داری درباره خودِ مایع قهوه حرف می‌زنی، درستش اینه:
How much coffee do you drink?

Q

کلمه data با much میاد یا many؟

توی اصطلاحات تکنولوژی امروزی، ما معمولاً با data مثل یک اسم غیرقابل‌شمارش رفتار می‌کنیم. "I don't have much data left on my roaming plan." (حجم دیتای زیادی روی طرح رومینگم نمونده). سخت‌گیرهای گرامری ممکنه بگن این کلمه جمعه، اما مگر اینکه داری یه مقاله علمی می‌نویسی، از همون much استفاده کن.

Yes, but it sounds very formal. It's better to use `a lot of`. However, you must use `much` if you add `so`, `too`, or `as` (e.g., 'so much fun').

It is countable. It is the plural of 'person'. So, always use `many people`.

In English, 'money' refers to the concept of currency as a mass. You count 'dollars' or 'euros' (many dollars), but you measure 'money' (much money).

`Many` is used mostly in questions and negatives. `A lot of` is used in positive sentences. In formal writing, `many` is preferred.

Yes! This is a common fixed expression used in emails and formal notes.

No. It is always uncountable. You say `much information` or `a lot of information`, never 'informations'.

You still use `How much`. For example: 'How much are these shoes?' Price is always `How much`.

No. When it means 'duration' (I don't have much time), it is uncountable. When it means 'occasions' (I've been there many times), it is countable.
