💡

Check the main verb

Always look at the first verb. If it's in the past, the second verb must be conditional.

Same Subject Rule

Always check if the subject of the main verb and the subordinate verb is the same. If it is, use 'de' + infinitive. It's much easier!

Review Summary

  • Verbe de parole + si + imparfait
  • Présent -> Imparfait; Passé Composé -> Plus-que-parfait
  • Future -> Conditionnel présent
  • Verbe de volonté + que + subjonctif

Common Mistakes

You cannot use the future tense after an introductory verb in the past. Use the conditional instead.

Wrong: Il a demandé si je viendrai.
Correct: Il a demandé si je viendrais.

If the reporting verb is in the past, the reported verb must also be in a past tense.

Wrong: Il a dit qu'il est fatigué.
Correct: Il a dit qu'il était fatigué.

Commands reported with 'ordonner que' require the subjunctive mood, not the indicative.

Wrong: Il a ordonné que nous partons.
Correct: Il a ordonné que nous partions.
