Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use '주무시다' instead of '자다' when talking about someone you need to show respect to, like elders or superiors.

- Use '자다' for yourself or peers: 나는 지금 자요 (I am sleeping now).
- Conjugate '주무시다' like a regular verb: 주무세요 (polite), 주무십니다 (formal).

Sin embargo, en coreano, la estructura gramatical cambia drásticamente dependiendo de a quién nos referimos.주무시다 (jumusida) es el equivalente honorífico de 자다 (jada), que significa 'dormir'.자다 para referirte a tu profesor o a tu abuelo sería visto como una falta de respeto considerable. Por otro lado, usar 주무시다 para hablar de ti mismo sería un error garrafal de etiqueta, pues te estarías 'autoadulando'. Este concepto es la base de la cortesía coreana.주무시다, debemos hablar de la 'supleción' (suppletion). En gramática española, tenemos verbos irregulares, pero el significado se mantiene en la raíz. Por ejemplo, en 'ir', decimos 'voy' o 'fuimos'.주무시다 es un verbo supletivo: no es una conjugación de 자다, sino una palabra totalmente distinta que reemplaza a la anterior para denotar respeto. Es como si en español tuviéramos el verbo 'comer' para amigos y, para personas mayores, tuviéramos que usar un verbo completamente nuevo, digamos, 'ingestar'.-(으)시-.가다 (ir) se convierte en 가시다. Pero 주무시다 es especial porque ya contiene esa carga de respeto en sí mismo. Por lo tanto, ¡ojo!, nunca debes añadir -(으)시- a 주무시다 (no digas *주무시시다).께서 en lugar de la partícula estándar 이/가.할아버지께서 주무십니다 es la estructura completa de respeto. Es una construcción que eleva al sujeto al nivel gramatical más alto.주무시- es tu nueva raíz verbal.
