When you are learning Korean, ~정도 is one of your best friends! It is a suffix that acts like a soft cushion for your numbers and measurements. Instead of saying 'It costs 5 dollars,' you can say 'It costs 5 dollars 정도,' which means 'about 5 dollars.'

Think of it as a way to say 'give or take.' It is incredibly common because we rarely need to be perfectly precise in casual conversation. Using this word makes you sound much more natural and less like a textbook robot.

The word 정도 (程度) comes from Sino-Korean roots, specifically the Chinese characters 程 (degree/limit) and 度 (measure/standard). Historically, it was used in formal writing to define the 'measure' or 'standard' of something.

Over centuries, it evolved from a rigid academic term into a versatile grammatical particle. In modern Korean, it has lost much of its heavy 'standard' connotation and is now the go-to word for 'approximately' in almost every social context.

어느 정도: This means 'to some extent.' It is used when you want to acknowledge that something is true, but perhaps not entirely. Example: 'I understand to some extent' (어느 정도 이해해요).

그 정도: This means 'that much.' It is often used to dismiss or confirm a quantity. Example: 'That much is fine' (그 정도면 돼요).

어느 정도까지: This means 'up to what point.' It is used when setting limits or boundaries in a discussion.

정도껏 해라: This is a slightly stern expression meaning 'do things in moderation' or 'don't overdo it.'

정도에 지나치다: This means 'to exceed the limit' or 'to go too far' in one's behavior or actions.

Grammatically, 정도 is a bound noun, meaning it must follow another word. It does not take plural markers because it is already a measurement term. It is often used with the particle ~쯤, though ~쯤 is more for time/location and ~정도 is more for quantity/degree.

Pronunciation is straightforward: 'jeong-do.' The 'j' is soft, and the 'o' sounds are rounded. There is no major stress difference; keep it flat and even for the most natural sound.
