Overview

T'as déjà regardé ton téléphone et vu une notification genre Your order has been picked up ou Your password has been changed ?
The chef has cooked the meal. On met le repas en premier : The meal has been cooked.
The world has been changed... sonne beaucoup plus cool que Some guy changed the world, pas vrai ?
My room has been cleaned!

How This Grammar Works

Tu dirais pas I have finished the project à chaque fois.
Parfois tu dirais The project has been successfully launched.

2
The Subject : C'est la chose qui reçoit l'action (ex : The report, The emails).
3
The Helping Verb : Utilise has pour les sujets singuliers (he, she, it) et have pour les sujets pluriels (I, you, we, they).
4
The Magic Word : Tu DOIS inclure been. C'est le marqueur du passif.
5
6
Structure : [Subject] + [have/has] + [been] + [V3]
7
Positive : The post has been shared.
8
Negative : The post hasn't been shared. (Ajoute juste not après have/has).
9
Question : Has the post been shared? (Inverse le sujet et have/has).

Conjugation Table

Form Example Translation
Positive The app has been updated. L'appli a été mise à jour.
Negative The tickets haven't been booked. Les billets n'ont pas été réservés.
Question Has the gift been wrapped? Le cadeau a-t-il été emballé ?
Plural Positive The photos have been deleted. Les photos ont été supprimées.

When To Use It

  • Recent News : A new planet has been discovered! (Parfait pour les clips d'infos TikTok).
  • Results & Consequences : The flight has been cancelled.
  • When the Who is a Mystery : My bike has been stolen!
  • Formal Announcements : The winners have been announced.
Has the group chat been muted? est une question qu'on a tous posée à 2 heures du mat'. C'est aussi génial pour être poli.
Si tu dis à un pote, You haven't paid me, ça sonne comme une attaque. Si tu dis, The money hasn't been sent yet, ça met l'accent sur la transaction, pas la personne. C'est le
coup de coude poli
de la grammaire anglaise.

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping been : C'est l'erreur n°1. Les gens disent The car has washed. À moins que tu vives dans un film Pixar, t'as besoin de been : The car has been washed.
  • Mixing up has and have : Rappelle-toi, c'est par rapport au *nouveau* sujet. Même si je (singulier) parle de the cookies (pluriel), je dois dire The cookies HAVE been eaten.
  • Using it for specific times : N'utilise pas ça avec yesterday ou last week. Tu peux pas dire It has been fixed yesterday. Utilise le Simple Past Passive pour ça (It was fixed yesterday).
C'est pas The letter has been wrote, c'est The letter has been written.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

  • Simple Past Passive : The bridge was built in 1990. (Fini, historique, date précise).
  • Present Perfect Passive : The bridge has been repaired.
Une autre comparaison est le Active Present Perfect (I have done it).
  • Active : I've sent the email. (Je suis le héros de cette phrase).
  • Passive : The email has been sent.

Quick FAQ

Q

Can I add the person who did it?

Oui ! Utilise juste by. The song has been covered by many artists.

Q

Is this common in speaking?

Super courant !

Q

How do I make it casual?

Utilise des contractions ! The job's been done au lieu de The job has been done. Ça sonne beaucoup plus naturel.

Q

Does it work for all verbs?

Tu peux pas dire It has been slept. Ça fait juste robot très confus.

Q

Is it okay to use in a job interview?

Absolument.

Politeness Levels

- Formal

The client has been informed of the delay. (Style email pro).

- Neutral

The laundry has been finished. (Vie quotidienne standard).

- Casual/Slang

Memory Trick

Rappelle-toi la règle B.B.V. : Been + Before + Verb 3. Tu as besoin du mot been *avant* (before) le verbe V3.

💡

Repère le 'Been' !

Si tu vois 'has been' ou 'have been' suivi d'un participe passé (V3), tu as sûrement trouvé un Present Perfect Passive.
The cake has been eaten.
⚠️

N'oublie pas 'Been'

Une erreur super fréquente, c'est de dire 'The homework has finished' au lieu de 'The homework has been finished'.
🎯

Quand utiliser 'By'

Par exemple : 'The book has been translated by a famous author.'

Smart Tips

Use the Present Perfect Passive to sound professional and focus on the project's progress.

I finished the tasks you gave me. All assigned tasks have been completed.

Use 'has been' to describe the change without needing to know who did it.

Someone painted this wall. This wall has been painted!

Use the passive to avoid sounding like you are accusing someone directly.

You didn't send the email. The email hasn't been sent yet.

Always double-check the V3 form. It's the most common place for mistakes.

The glass has been broke. The glass has been broken.

Prononciation

/hæz bɪn/

The weak 'been'

In natural speech, 'been' is often pronounced as /bɪn/ (like 'bin') rather than /biːn/ (like 'bean').

It's been FINISHED.

Contraction stress

When using 'I've been' or 'It's been', the stress is usually on the past participle, not the auxiliary.

Rising intonation for questions

Has the mail been delivered? ↗

Asking for confirmation.

Moyen mnémotechnique

Remember 'H.B.P.' — Has Been Participle. It's like a 'Happy Birthday Party' for the object!

Association visuelle

Imagine a 'Finished' stamp being pressed onto a box. The box is the subject, and the stamp is the 'has been done' part. The box doesn't move itself; someone else stamps it.

Rhyme

If the work is through and the result is new, 'Has been done' is the tense for you!

Story

A detective walks into a room. He sees a broken window. He says, 'The window has been broken.' He sees an empty safe. He says, 'The money has been stolen.' He doesn't know who did it yet, but he sees the results everywhere.

Défi

Look around your room. Find three things that have changed today and say them in the passive. (e.g., 'The bed has been made.')

Notes culturelles

British speakers use the Present Perfect Passive much more frequently than Americans for recent events.

In scientific and academic writing, this tense is used to maintain an objective, impersonal tone.

Used to avoid direct blame. Instead of 'You didn't pay the bill,' a company will say 'The bill hasn't been paid.'

The passive voice in English evolved from Old English 'beon' (to be) and 'weorthan' (to become).

FAQ (8)

Yes! You can say 'The book has been written by a famous author.' However, we usually omit it if the person isn't important.

'Was done' is for a specific past time (e.g., yesterday). 'Has been done' is for an unspecified time or when the result is important now.

'Been' is the passive marker. Without it, the sentence is active. 'The dog has fed' means the dog gave food to someone else!

Yes, especially when talking about news, chores, or things that have gone wrong (like 'My phone has been stolen').

Absolutely. 'The winner has just been announced' is a very common way to report recent news.

No. Only 'transitive' verbs (verbs that take an object) can be passive. You can't say 'He has been slept.'

Swap the subject and 'has/have'. For example: 'Has the car been washed?'

It is neutral. It can be used in both formal emails and casual conversation.
