状態動詞を伴う現在完了形 (知っている、~である)

過去から現在まで続く「状態」や「気持ち」を表す時に、「Present Perfect」を使うと、とても自然な英語になりますよ。

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use Present Perfect with state verbs to describe situations that started in the past and continue right now.

  • Use 'have/has' + past participle for states like 'know' or 'be'. Example: 'I have been here since noon.'
  • Never use the '-ing' form with state verbs in this context. Example: 'I have known him' NOT 'I have been knowing him'.
  • Use 'for' for a period of time and 'since' for a specific starting point. Example: 'I've had this car for a month.'
👤 + have/has + 🧠/❤️/🏠 (V3) + ⏳

Overview

I've been knowing my roommate for three years(ルームメイトと知り合って3年になる)なんて言ったら、バグったAIみたいに聞こえちゃうって知ってた?

How This Grammar Works

Memory Trick: The Statue Rule
状態動詞を 銅像(どうぞう) (statues) だと思ってみて。銅像は動かない。ただそこに「ある」だけ。銅像をマラソン大会(-ing)に出すことはできないよね。だから、Present Perfect のシンプルな形(have + past participle 過去分詞(かこぶんし))のままにしておこう。

Formation Pattern

1
これを作るのは、IKEAの家具を組み立てるよりも簡単だよ(ネジが余って途方に暮れることもないしね)。
2
主語(しゅご)を選ぶ: I, You, We, They または He, She, It
3
助動詞(じょどうし)を加える: ほとんどは have だけど、特別な3人組(He/She/It)には has を使うよ。
4
過去分詞(かこぶんし)を入れる: 動詞の「3番目の形」のことだね(例: been, known, had, owned)。
5
(とき)の目印を加える: since(特定の開始点)か for(期間や時間の長さ)を使おう。

When To Use It

これはただ教室で勉強するためだけのものじゃないんだ。自分の「信頼(しんらい)」を勝ち取ったり、変わっていない状況を説明したりする時には、いつでもこれを使うよ。
  • 長年(ながねん)の人間関係: 友達やパートナー、あるいはいつも名前を間違えるあのバリスタについても。I've known Sarah since middle school.
  • 所有物(しょゆうぶつ): ビンテージのテック製品や、アヒルのラバーダックの変なコレクションを自慢する時に。He's had that MacBook for a decade.
  • 信念(しんねん)や好み: K-POPへの不滅の愛や、自分の猫は秘密工作員なんじゃないかという長年の疑念について。I've always believed in ghosts.
  • 身体的(しんたいてき)な状態: しばらく病気だったり、疲れていたり、あるいはお腹が空いていたりする時に。I've been hungry since I saw that pizza ad on Instagram.
Real Conversations
*Scenario 1: At a Party*
Alex:
How do you know Ben?
(ベンとはどういう知り合い?)
Sam: "Oh, we've been friends since we were five. We've known each other longer than we've known how to tie our own shoes!" (ああ、5歳の時からの友達だよ。自分の靴紐の結び方を覚えるよりも前から、お互いのことを知ってるんだ!)
*Scenario 2: Tech Support*
User:
My Wi-Fi is acting up.
(Wi-Fiの調子がおかしいんです。)
Tech:
How long have you had this router?
(このルーターはどれくらいお使いですか?)
User: "I've owned it for about six years. Is that bad?" (6年くらい持ってます。まずいですか?)
Tech:
Sir, that router belongs in a museum.
(お客さま、そのルーターは博物館行きですよ。)

Common Mistakes

賢い人でもつまずいちゃうポイント。君は気をつけようね。
  • The Present Simple Trap: 過去に始まったことなのに現在形を使っちゃう。
  • I know him for 10 years.
  • I have known him for 10 years.
(もし上の文を言っちゃうと、会ったばかりなのに時間の感覚がおかしい人だと思われちゃうかも。)
  • The -ing Obsession: 状態動詞を無理やりダイナミックにしようとしちゃう。
  • I've been having this car for ages.
  • I've had this car for ages.
(今まさに車をムシャムシャ食べてる最中――おすすめしないけどね――でもない限り、シンプルな形を使おう。)
  • Since vs. For Confusion: 開始点と合計時間を混ぜちゃう。
  • I've been here since three hours.
  • I've been here for three hours. または I've been here since 2 PM.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Present Perfect vs. Past Simple

Past Simple: その状態はもう「死んでる」。終わったことなんだ。I was a student for four years.(当時は学生だったけど、今は大富豪か、たぶん求職中)。
Present Perfect: その状態は「生きてる」。今も続いてるんだ。I've been a student for four years.(今も学生だよ、カフェインを差し入れて)。

Present Perfect vs. Present Perfect Continuous

Continuous: GoProで撮れるような物理的なアクションに使う。I've been running.(ずっと走ってた)。
Simple: 録画できないような状態に使う。I've liked running since I was a kid.(「走ること」は撮れるけど、「好きであること」は撮れないよね)。

Quick FAQ

Q

have-ing で使うことって一生ないの?

いや、あるよ!でもそれは「経験している」とか「アクションをしている」という意味の時だけ。例えば I've been having a great time(楽しい時間を過ごしている)みたいにね。「持っている(所有)」という意味の時はシンプルにいこう:I've had this laptop since 2020

Q

want は状態動詞なの?

その通り。I've wanted that new iPhone for months と言うよ。I've been wanting とは言わないんだ(すごくカジュアルな英語では聞くこともあるけど、試験ではシンプルな形にしておくのが無難だよ)。

Q

livework はどう?

こいつらは「反逆児(はんぎゃくじ)」だね。どっちでもいけるんだ!I've lived here for a year と言ってもいいし、I've been living here for a year と言ってもいい。どっちも正解。英語ってたまにそういう変なところがあるんだよね。

Q

since の後には絶対「年」を入れなきゃダメ?

そんなことないよ!時点を表せれば何でもOK。Since lunch(昼食以来)、Since I met you(君に会ってから)、Since the last season of Stranger Things came out(ストレンジャー・シングスの最新シーズンが出てから)――全部バッチリだよ。

💡

「動作」じゃない動詞を見つけよう

状態動詞は「状態」を表す動詞で、「走る」や「食べる」みたいに「動作」をすることはありません。「知る (know)」「愛する (love)」「〜である (be)」などがそうです。「I have known him for years."
⚠️

状態動詞に -ing は使わない!

これはとっても大事なポイントです!状態動詞を現在完了形で使う時、-ing をつけるのは避けましょう。「I have been knowing」ではなく、「I have known」が正しい表現です。「She has been busy all day."
🎯

「for」と「since」に耳を傾けてみて

「for」と「since」は現在完了形の親友のようなものです。状態が「どれくらいの期間」続いているか、「いつから」始まったかを明確に教えてくれます。次のカフェでの会話で使ってみてくださいね!「We have had this laptop for three months."
🌍

もっと自然に聞こえるコツ

状態動詞を現在完了形と正しく使うことで、あなたの英語はぐっと自然でネイティブらしい響きになります。英語を話す人たちは、日常でずっと続く状態をこうやって表現するんですよ。「He has lived in London his entire life."
💡

過去と現在をつなげるイメージ

この時制の核となる考え方をいつも思い出してください。それは、過去に始まった何かが「今この瞬間」まで直接つながっている、ということです。その状態はまだ続いているんです!「I have always believed in you."

Smart Tips

Stop! If you use 'for' or 'since', you must change 'am' to 'have been'.

I am here for two hours. I have been here for two hours.

Don't be afraid of 'have had'. It's perfectly normal English.

I have this car since 2010. I have had this car since 2010.

Verbs like 'like', 'love', and 'hate' are states. Use Present Perfect Simple for duration.

I've been liking this song for a week. I've liked this song for a week.

発音

/aɪv bɪn/

Contraction Stress

In natural speech, 'I have' becomes 'I've' /aɪv/. The 'v' sound is very short.

/ʃiz/

The 'h' in 'has'

When 'has' is not contracted, the 'h' is often dropped in fast speech: 'She's been' /ʃiz bɪn/.

Duration Emphasis

I've been here for ↗FIVE hours!

Rising intonation on the time period shows surprise or annoyance.

Remember 'K.B.H.' — Know, Be, Have. These three are the kings of the stative Present Perfect.

視覚的連想

Imagine a bridge. One side is 'The Past' and the other is 'Now'. The bridge is made of a long, unmoving stone (the state verb). You are standing in the middle, looking at both sides.

Rhyme

If the state is still true and started way back, use 'have' and 'has' to stay on the track.

Story

I have known my dog since he was a puppy. I have had him for five years. He has been my best friend the whole time. (Notice how the states of knowing, owning, and being all connect the puppy-past to the dog-present).

Word Web

チャレンジ

Write down three things you have owned for more than a year using 'I have had... for...'

文化メモ

Brits are very strict about using Present Perfect for recent states. 'I've just been to the shops' is more common than 'I was just at the shops'.

Americans sometimes use the Past Simple where Brits use the Present Perfect, but for state verbs with 'for/since', the Present Perfect is still the standard.

Using 'I have been' instead of 'I am' for duration is a key marker of professional fluency in international meetings.

The Present Perfect comes from the Old English 'habban' (to have) combined with a past participle to show possession of a completed act.

会話のきっかけ

How long have you lived in your current home?

Who is your oldest friend? How long have you known them?

What is something you have owned since you were a child?

How long have you believed in your current career path?

日記のテーマ

Write about a hobby you have. How long have you had this interest?
Describe your best friend. How long have you known each other and what states of friendship have you shared?
Reflect on a belief or value you hold. How long have you felt this way?

No. 'Know' is a state verb. You must say `I've known him`.

Use `for` for a period of time (for 2 hours) and `since` for a starting point (since 2 o'clock).

Yes! The first 'have' is the auxiliary verb, and 'had' is the past participle of the main verb 'have' (meaning to possess).

The Present Simple only describes the current moment. To include the past duration, English requires the `Present Perfect`.

Yes, but 'live' and 'work' are special. You can use either `Present Perfect Simple` or `Continuous` with them with almost no change in meaning.

Yes! `I have always loved pizza` is a perfect example of a state that started in the past and continues.

Switch the subject and 'have/has'. For example: `Have you been here long?`

If the state is finished, use the `Past Simple`. Example: 'I was a student for four years' (but I am not now).
