Pivotal Constructions: Ask Him to Come (请你帮我, 让他来)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use a 'pivotal' verb to make someone perform an action: Subject + Verb 1 + Person + Verb 2.

  • The first verb acts as a trigger (e.g., 请, 叫, 让).
  • The person in the middle serves as the object of the first verb and subject of the second.
  • Never add a second subject before the second verb.
Subject + Verb 1 (Trigger) + Person + Verb 2 (Action)

Overview

In a pivotal construction, the object of the first verb is also the subject of the second verb. Pattern: Subject1 + V1 + Person + V2 + (Object). Common V1 verbs: 请 (invite/please), 让 (let/make), 叫 (ask/tell). The person in the middle is the pivot.
