Joseph Stalin Was Very Wrong About Agriculture

Imagine it’s 1935, and you’re a Soviet agronomist.

تصور کن سال ۱۹۳۵ باشه، و تو یه زارع شوروی باشی.

Not just any agronomist, though. You’re the founder and head of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

نه فقط هر زارعی، البته. تو بنیان‌گذار و رئیس آکادمی علوم کشاورزی لنین هستی.

And among your many accomplishments, your research had led you to  propose that certain crops… like the rye that helped  feed your fellow comrades… were basically an accident.  Humans didn’t domesticate them.

و در میان دستاوردهای زیاد، تحقیقاتت تو رو به این نتیجه رسونده که بعضی از محصولات... مثل چاودار که به تغذیه رفقای هموطنت کمک می‌کرد... اساساً تصادفی بودن. انسان‌ها اونا رو اهلی نکردن.

Thanks to evolution, they domesticated themselves.

به لطف تکامل، خودشون رو اهلی کردن.

Oh, and your reward for all your hard  work? You just lost your job.

اوه، و پاداش تو برای همه‌ی این کار سخت؟ شغلت رو از دست دادی.

One of your academic rivals  has the ear of Joseph Stalin, and neither of them believe  biology works the way you do.

یکی از رقبای آکادمیکت گوش استالین رو داره، و هیچ‌کدومشون باور ندارن که زیست‌شناسی اونطور که تو فکر می‌کنی کار می‌کنه.

You are Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov. And the next eight years of  your life do not get better.

تو نیکولای ایوانوویچ وِویلُف هستی. و هشت سال بعدی زندگی‌ات بهتر نمی‌شه.

But decades after your death, scientists totally got your  back, and proved you were right.

اما دهه‌ها بعد از مرگت، دانشمندا کاملاً ازت حمایت کردن، و ثابت کردن که حق با تو بوده.

Let’s turn back the clock just a bit,  and establish Vavilov’s credentials.

بیایید کمی به عقب برگردیم، و اعتبار وِویلُف رو مشخص کنیم.

This was a guy obsessed  with the history of plants.

این مردی بود که وسواس تاریخ گیاهان رو داشت.

Or more specifically, the  science of the history of plants.

یا به طور خاص‌تر، علم تاریخ گیاهان.

I’m talking stuff like heredity,  genetics, and natural selection.

دارم در مورد چیزایی مثل وراثت، ژنتیک، و انتخاب طبیعی حرف می‌زنم.

He did a lot of research trying to find where important crops were first domesticated, and what happened as they spread  to other parts of the world.

اون تحقیقات زیادی انجام داد تا بفهمه محصولات مهم کجا اولین بار اهلی شدن، و وقتی تو بقیه‌ی نقاط دنیا پخش شدن چه اتفاقی افتاد.

He also basically invented  the concept of a seed bank, and there is a great story about  the one he founded in Leningrad.

اون همچنین مفهوم بانک بذر رو اختراع کرد، و یه داستان عالی در مورد بانکی که اون در لنینگراد تأسیس کرد وجود داره.
