Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

When you have an infinitive verb, you can attach direct object pronouns (lo, la, los, las) directly to the end of the verb.

  • Drop the final 'r' of the infinitive and add the pronoun: 'Comer' + 'o' = 'Comê-lo'.
  • If the verb ends in 's' or 'z', drop the letter and add 'lo/la' with an 'l': 'Fiz' + 'o' = 'Fi-lo'.
  • If the verb ends in a nasal sound (m, ão, õe), add 'no/na/nos/nas': 'Comeram' + 'o' = 'Comeram-no'.

Vous êtes-vous déjà demandé d'où venait ce 'L' en portugais ? Vous voyez fazer, et soudain c'est fazê-lo ? Ce n'est pas du hasard, c'est la règle pour les pronoms objets après les verbes finissant en -R, -S ou -Z.
Si les Brésiliens l'évitent à l'oral (préférant fazer ele), c'est obligatoire à l'écrit formel et standard au Portugal. Décryptons cela.

How This Grammar Works

C'est une question de fluidité. En portugais, lier un verbe en 'R' avec une voyelle comme 'o' sonne mal. Essayez de dire fazer o vite. C'est pâteux. La langue a donc créé un pont.
La logique : Le verbe perd sa consonne finale (-r, -s ou -z). Pour compenser, le pronom met un déguisement en 'L' (devenant lo, la, los, las). Enfin, comme on coupe la fin du verbe, on ajoute souvent un accent pour protéger l'intonation d'origine.

When To Use It

Au Brésil : C'est la grammaire costume-cravate. Utilisez-le dans les CV ou emails formels. Rare à l'oral.
Au Portugal : C'est la norme. Dire Vou ver ele à Lisbonne sonne faux. Vou vê-lo est correct.

Common Mistakes

Oublier l'Accent : Écrire ame-lo au lieu de amá-lo. Ça change la prononciation !
Le Piège du Z : Oublier que ça s'applique aux verbes en 'Z'. Fiz + o devient fi-lo.

Tu verras surtout cette règle avec le 'R'. Avec 'S' ou 'Z', c'est très rare à l'oral aujourd'hui :
