, o sujeito eu é o mesmo para as duas ações. O alemão é muito econômico: se o sujeito é o mesmo, ele não quer repetir o pronome desnecessariamente.
É aí que entra o zu. Pense no zu como um conector que liga a ideia de substituição ao verbo no infinitivo.
Olha a comparação:
  • Português: Em vez de fazer (infinitivo) algo...
  • Alemão: statt algo zu machen (infinitivo).
Percebeu a diferença na posição? Enquanto em português o de vem antes do verbo, no alemão o zu fica colado no infinitivo, e o statt (ou anstatt) abre a oração. Se o verbo for separável, como einkaufen (fazer compras), o zu entra no meio: einzukaufen.
