Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the Imperfect Subjunctive (Se + -sse) to talk about hypothetical, imaginary, or unlikely situations in the present or future.
- Use 'Se' + Imperfect Subjunctive for the condition: 'Se eu tivesse dinheiro...' (If I had money...)
- Use the Conditional tense for the result: '...eu viajaria.' (...I would travel.)
- The order can be reversed: 'Eu viajaria se tivesse dinheiro.'
Overview

Se eu tenho...）を使ってしまうミスが非常に多いです。日本語の「もし〜あるなら」をそのまま直訳すると、事実に即した条件と仮定の条件の区別が曖昧になります。常に「これは現実の話か？それとも空想か？」と自問自答する癖をつけましょう。 - 2時制の不一致:
Se eu tivesse, eu comprarei.（もし持っていたら、買うだろう。）というように、条件節に過去の形、帰結節に未来の形を置いてしまうミスです。日本語では「もし持っていたら（過去形）、買う（現在・未来）」という時制の混在が自然ですが、ポルトガル語ではこの組み合わせは文法的にNGです。必ず「過去の形（半過去）＋過去の形（過去未来）」というセットで覚えましょう。 - 3
Seの後の未来形使用:Se eu terei tempo...のように、条件節に未来形（Futuro do Presente）を使おうとするミスです。日本語の「もし時間があれば」という表現の「あれば」が未来を指しているため、未来形を使いたくなる心理が働きますが、ポルトガル語のルールではSeの直後に未来形は置けません。
