پرسش‌های نقل شده با کلمات پرسشی (چه کسی، چه چیزی، چرا)

سوالات غیرمستقیم 'wh-' سوال‌ها رو به جمله خبری تبدیل می‌کنن. یادت باشه که «ترتیب کلمات» و «تغییر زمان فعل» خیلی مهمه!

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Switch from question order to statement order and drop 'do/does/did' when reporting Wh-questions.

  • Use statement word order: Subject + Verb, not Verb + Subject. Example: 'where he was' not 'where was he'.
  • Remove auxiliary 'do', 'does', or 'did'. Example: 'why she left' not 'why did she leave'.
  • Shift tenses backward (Backshift) if the reporting verb is in the past. Example: 'is' becomes 'was'.

### Overview
### How This Grammar Works
  1. 1ترتیب کلمات (Word Order): در پرسش‌های مستقیم، فعل کمکی قبل از فاعل می‌آید (Where are you going?). اما در نقل‌قول غیرمستقیم، فاعل باید قبل از فعل قرار بگیرد (He asked where I was going).
He asked why I was laughing (تغییر از حال استمراری به گذشته استمراری).
### Formation Pattern
برای ساختن یک پرسش گزارش‌شده با کلمات پرسشی، از الگوی زیر پیروی می‌کنیم:
[Subject] + [Reporting Verb] + [Question Word] + [Reported Subject] + [Reported Verb]
#### ۱. افعال گزارش‌دهنده (Reporting Verbs)
انتخاب فعل مناسب می‌تواند لحن شما را از یک مکالمه دوستانه به یک گزارش رسمی تغییر دهد. در جدول زیر برخی از پرکاربردترین افعال را مشاهده می‌کنید:
| فعل گزارش‌دهنده | لحن و کاربرد | مثال در نقل‌قول غیرمستقیم |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| ask | خنثی و پرکاربرد | She asked why the project was delayed. |
| wonder | بیان کنجکاوی یا تردید | I wondered how they had finished so fast. |
| inquire | رسمی و اداری | The client inquired when the delivery would arrive. |
| want to know | مستقیم و قاطع | The manager wanted to know who was responsible. |
| demand to know | تاکیدی و گاهی تند | He demanded to know why he hadn't been informed. |
#### ۲. ترتیب اجزای جمله
به یاد داشته باشید که کلمه پرسشی (مانند why یا where) در اینجا نقش یک «حرف ربط» را ایفا می‌کند. بلافاصله بعد از آن، باید فاعل بیاید.
  • Direct: “What is your name?”
  • Reported: He asked what my name was. (نه what was my name)
#### ۳. تغییرات زمانی (Backshift)
در سطح C1، شما باید بدانید که چه زمانی backshift اجباری است و چه زمانی اختیاری. اگر حقیقتی که درباره‌اش سوال شده هنوز پابرجا باشد، می‌توانید زمان فعل را تغییر ندهید، اما در متون آکادمیک و رسمی، عقب بردن زمان فعل همیشه ترجیح داده می‌شود.
| زمان در پرسش مستقیم | زمان در نقل‌قول غیرمستقیم | مثال |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Present Simple | Past Simple | “Where do you live?”He asked where I lived. |
| Present Continuous | Past Continuous | “What are you doing?”She asked what I was doing. |
| Past Simple | Past Perfect | “Why did you leave?”He asked why I had left. |
| Present Perfect | Past Perfect | “How long have you been here?”She asked how long I had been there. |
| Will | Would | “When will you call?”He asked when I would call. |
| Can | Could | “How can I help?”She asked how she could help. |
### When To Use It
استفاده از این ساختار در چندین موقعیت کلیدی برای یک سخنور سطح پیشرفته ضروری است:
۱. در محیط‌های آکادمیک و پژوهشی:
هنگام مرور ادبیات تحقیق (Literature Review) یا گزارش یافته‌های دیگران، شما نیاز دارید که پرسش‌های مطرح شده در مطالعات قبلی را گزارش کنید.
  • مثال: The researchers investigated why certain demographics were more prone to the virus.
۲. در مکاتبات رسمی و محیط کار:
برای گزارش دادن سوالات مشتریان، مدیران یا همکاران در ایمیل‌ها و گزارش‌های مکتوب. این کار باعث می‌شود متن شما منسجم‌تر و حرفه‌ای‌تر به نظر برسد.
  • مثال: The board inquired how the new policy would affect the annual budget.
۳. برای رعایت ادب و نزاکت (Politeness):
گاهی اوقات پرسیدن سوال به صورت مستقیم (Direct Question) ممکن است خیلی تند یا تهاجمی به نظر برسد. استفاده از نقل‌قول غیرمستقیم یا پرسش‌های غیرمستقیم (Indirect Questions) لحن را نرم‌تر می‌کند.
  • مثال به جای Why are you late? می‌توانید بگوییم: I was wondering why you were late.
۴. در روایتگری و داستان‌نویسی:
برای توصیف افکار درونی شخصیت‌ها یا بازگویی دیالوگ‌ها بدون استفاده از علامت نقل‌قول (Quotation Marks). این کار به جریان سیال داستان کمک می‌کند.
### Common Mistakes
He asked me where was I going.
  • درست: He asked me where I was going.
نکته استاد: همیشه به خودتان یادآوری کنید که در انتهای این جملات «نقطه» می‌گذاریم، نه «علامت سوال». پس ساختار باید اخباری باشد.
۲. استفاده از کلمه that قبل از کلمه پرسشی:
این یکی از رایج‌ترین اشتباهات است چون ما در فارسی همیشه از «که» استفاده می‌کنیم («پرسید که چرا...»).
  • اشتباه: She asked that why I called her.
  • درست: She asked why I called her.
در انگلیسی، کلمه پرسشی خودش نقش پیونددهنده را دارد و نیازی به that نیست.
۳. فراموش کردن حذف افعال کمکی do/does/did:
  • اشتباه: He asked what time did the meeting start.
  • درست: He asked what time the meeting started.
وقتی did حذف می‌شود، زمان آن باید در فعل اصلی اعمال شود (تغییر start به started).
### Contrast With Similar Patterns
بسیاری از زبان‌آموزان نقل‌قول غیرمستقیم را با «پرسش‌های غیرمستقیم» (Indirect Questions) اشتباه می‌گیرند. اگرچه هر دو از ترتیب کلمات اخباری استفاده می‌کنند، اما کاربرد و ساختار شروع‌کننده آن‌ها متفاوت است.
| ویژگی | نقل‌قول غیرمستقیم (Reported Question) | پرسش غیرمستقیم (Indirect Question) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| هدف | گزارش دادن سوالی که در گذشته پرسیده شده. | پرسیدن یک سوال در زمان حال به صورت مودبانه. |
| شروع‌کننده | He asked... / They wondered... | Could you tell me... / Do you know... |
| زمان فعل | معمولاً دچار backshift می‌شود. | معمولاً در زمان حال باقی می‌ماند. |
| مثال | She asked where the bank was. | Could you tell me where the bank is? |
همچنین تفاوت مهمی بین پرسش‌های با کلمات Wh و پرسش‌های Yes/No وجود دارد. در پرسش‌های Yes/No ما از if یا whether به عنوان پیونددهنده استفاده می‌کنیم، اما در پرسش‌های موضوع این درس، خودِ کلمه پرسشی این نقش را دارد.
### Quick FAQ
۱. آیا همیشه باید زمان فعل را به عقب برگردانیم؟
خیر. اگر مطلبی که گزارش می‌کنید هنوز هم در زمان حال صادق است (مثلاً یک حقیقت علمی یا یک وضعیت دائمی)، می‌توانید زمان را تغییر ندهید. مثلاً: He asked what the capital of France is.
  • Direct: “Who called you?”
  • Reported: He asked who had called me.
در اینجا ترتیب فاعل و فعل از قبل رعایت شده است، فقط زمان فعل تغییر می‌کند.

Reported Questions with Question Words (Who, What, Why) در مقابل Reported Questions vs. Indirect Questions

Learners often think they are the same. While they use the same word order, reported questions refer to the past, while indirect questions are often used for present politeness.

Reported Questions with Question Words (Who, What, Why) در مقابل Who as Subject vs. Who as Object

When 'who' is the subject of the question, the word order doesn't seem to change much, which confuses learners.

Reported Questions with Question Words (Who, What, Why) در مقابل Whether vs. Wh-words

Learners sometimes try to use 'whether' with a Wh-word.

💡

قانون 'عدم وارونگی' رو تمرین کن

خیلی راحته که اشتباهی ترتیب کلمات سوالی رو حفظ کنی. همیشه یادت باشه که سوالات غیرمستقیم، جمله‌خبری هستن، پس فاعل قبل از فعل میاد، دقیقاً مثل یه جمله عادی. این مهم‌ترین نکته‌ایه که باید رعایت کنی.
She asked what I wanted.
(درست) نه
She asked what did I want?
(غلط).
⚠️

مواظب 'تغییر زمان فعل' باش

با اینکه معمولاً زمان فعل رو باید به گذشته برگردونی، اما همیشه اینطور نیست. اگه اطلاعاتی که گزارش می‌کنی هنوز هم درسته و واقعیت داره، ممکنه زمان فعل رو عوض نکنی. مثلاً:
He asked where Paris is

She inquired about the new policy.
🌍

ادب و غیرمستقیم صحبت کردن

استفاده از سوالات غیرمستقیم، مخصوصاً با عباراتی مثل 'I was wondering...', یه راه خیلی رایج برای مودب بودن یا کمتر مستقیم صحبت کردن توی فرهنگ انگلیسی‌زبان‌هاست. این کار سوال تو رو نرم‌تر می‌کنه و تو رو محتاط‌تر نشون میده. مثلاً:
I was wondering if you could help me.
(مودبانه‌تر از 'Can you help me?').

Smart Tips

Stop! Delete 'did' and move the main verb into the Past Perfect.

He asked why did I go. He asked why I had gone.

Don't overthink the word order; it stays the same, just change the tense.

Who saw you? He asked who had seen me.

Use 'I was wondering if you could clarify why...' instead of 'Why did...'.

Why was the meeting cancelled? I was wondering if you could clarify why the meeting was cancelled.

Say the reported part as a normal sentence first, then add 'He asked' at the front.

Where is he? -> Is he where? He is there. -> He asked where he was.

تلفظ

He asked where she lived. (Voice goes down at 'lived')

Falling Intonation

Unlike direct questions which may have rising intonation, reported questions end with falling intonation because they are grammatically statements.

She asked WHY he left.

Stress on Wh-word

The Wh-word (why, what, where) often receives slightly more stress as it is the key information link.

Declarative Fall

I asked what he wanted. ↘

Conveys that the speaker is making a statement of fact about a past inquiry.

روش یادسپاری

Remember 'SV' (Subject-Verb) for Reported Speech, not 'VS' (Verb-Subject) for Questions.

تداعی تصویری

Imagine a question mark (?) being flattened into a period (.) as it moves from a direct quote into a reported sentence. The 'do' auxiliary falls off the sentence like a loose leaf.

Rhyme

When reporting what they say, throw the 'do' and 'does' away. Put the subject in the lead, that is all the help you need!

Story

A detective is reporting to his boss. He doesn't ask 'Who did it?'; he tells his boss 'I asked the witness who had done it.' He changes the tense to show the mystery is being solved.

چالش

نکات فرهنگی

In formal British English, 'inquire' is often spelled with an 'e' (enquire) for general questions and an 'i' (inquire) for formal investigations, though this distinction is fading.

Americans are more likely to use 'asked' even in semi-formal contexts, reserving 'inquired' for very formal or legal situations.

Using reported questions is a key 'softening' technique in global business culture to avoid sounding too demanding or aggressive.

The structure of reported speech in English evolved from Old English, where 'thaet' (that) was often used to introduce reported clauses, including questions.

شروع‌کننده‌های مکالمه

Tell me about a time someone asked you why you chose your career.

If you could ask a famous person one thing, what would it be? Now, tell me what you would ask them using reported speech.

Not always. If the reporting verb is in the present (e.g., 'He asks') or if the situation is still true (e.g., 'He asked where the station is'), you can keep the present tense.

No. In standard English, we do not use `that` before a Wh-word. For example, say 'He asked why I left,' not 'He asked that why I left.'

`Ask` is neutral and common. `Inquire` is formal and often used in business or official contexts. `Inquire` often takes the preposition `about` or the phrase `as to`.

For Yes/No questions, use `if` or `whether` instead of a Wh-word. For example, 'Are you coming?' becomes 'He asked if I was coming.'

These are 'dummy' auxiliaries used only to facilitate inversion in questions. Since reported questions don't have inversion, these auxiliaries are no longer needed.

No. 'I wonder why he is late' is a statement, so it ends with a period. However, 'Do you wonder why he is late?' is a question and needs a question mark.

If `shall` is used for a future fact, it becomes `would`. If it's used for a suggestion (e.g., 'Shall we go?'), it often becomes `should` (e.g., 'He asked if we should go').

In some dialects (like Hiberno-English) or in very informal speech, you might hear it, but in standard English and all exams, it is considered incorrect.

In Other Languages

Spanish high

Preguntas indirectas (e.g., Me preguntó qué quería)

Spanish doesn't have an equivalent to the 'do/does' auxiliary, so the 'removal' rule isn't a problem for them.

French moderate

L'interrogation indirecte (e.g., Il a demandé ce que je faisais)

French uses 'ce que' or 'ce qui' for 'what', whereas English just uses 'what'.

German moderate

Indirekte Fragesätze (e.g., Er fragte, was ich mache)

In German, the verb moves to the end; in English, it just moves after the subject.

Japanese low

Kikimashita (e.g., Nani o shite iru ka kikimashita)

Japanese keeps the question marker 'ka', while English removes all question markers (like 'do' or the question mark).

Arabic low

Al-as'ila al-ghayr mubashira

Arabic does not have a mandatory backshift of tenses like English does.

Chinese none

Jiànjiē wèntí

Chinese has no structural change at all, making the English 'transformation' very difficult for learners.
