Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
The Spanish gerund adds '-ando' or '-iendo' to verbs to describe actions currently in progress.
- For -AR verbs, drop the ending and add -ando: Hablar -> Hablando.
- For -ER/-IR verbs, drop the ending and add -iendo: Comer -> Comiendo.
- Use the gerund with 'estar' to form the present continuous: Estoy comiendo (I am eating).

Estar + Gerundio）: 今まさに目撃していることや、一時的な状況を表します。「今、何してる？」とSNSでメッセージを送る時、¿Qué estás haciendo?と言いますね。これは日本語の「何してるの？」と全く同じ感覚です。 - 2継続（
Seguir + Gerundio）: 「～し続ける」という意味です。日本語の「まだ～している」という継続のニュアンスに近いです。例えばSigo estudiando españolは「まだスペイン語を勉強し続けている」となります。 - 3緩慢な変化（
Ir + Gerundio）: 「徐々に～していく」というプロセスを表します。Va mejorando（徐々に良くなってきている）のように、時間とともに変化する様子を表現するのに適しています。 - 4付帯状況: 先述の通り「～しながら」という状況を表します。
Cantando, camino a la escuela.（歌いながら学校へ歩く）のように、メインの動作と同時に行っていることを伝えます。
- 1「名詞」としてジェルンディオを使ってしまう: 日本語では「泳ぐこと」を「泳ぎ」と名詞化しますが、スペイン語で「泳ぐことは楽しい」と言う時に
Nadando es divertidoとは言いません。スペイン語では名詞化には「不定詞（Infinitivo）」を使うため、Nadar es divertidoが正解です。英語の「Swimming is fun」という感覚に引きずられやすいので注意しましょう。 - 2完了した動作にジェルンディオを使う: 日本語の「～している」は、結果の状態（例：ドアが開いている）も表しますが、スペイン語のジェルンディオはあくまで「動作中」のみです。「ドアが開いている」は
La puerta está abiertaと形容詞を使います。La puerta está abriendoと言うと「ドアが（今まさに）開けられつつある」という不自然な表現になります。 - 3ジェルンディオ単独での使用: 日本語の「～て」形は文を繋ぐのに便利ですが、スペイン語でジェルンディオを「そして」のように文を繋ぐために使うのは避けましょう。
Llegué a casa y comí（帰宅して食べた）をLlegué a casa comiendoと言うと「食べながら帰宅した」という別の意味になってしまいます。
