سر قوة هذه الأدوات يكمن في مبدأ الـ Parallelism أو «التوازي النحوي». في العربية، عندما نقول «إنه ليس ذكياً فحسب، بل هو مجتهد أيضاً»، نحن نستخدم «ليس... بل» كأداة ربط مترابطة.
في البرتغالية، الأمر مشابه تماماً ولكن بقواعد أكثر صرامة. التوازي يعني أن العنصر الذي يأتي بعد الجزء الأول من الأداة يجب أن يطابق تماماً في النوع النحوي العنصر الذي يأتي بعد الجزء الثاني.
